HDPE SPIRAL PIPE Information PP-B. part 4
Long term durability
Although the pipe is not pressurides it still has to withstand considerable loads from the soil and traffic and therefore the long term strenght and crack resistance of the material are of essential importance. Therefore it is important to only select PP-B and PP-B HM materials that demonstrate that they can meet the requirements according to relevant product standards e.g. EN 1852, EN 13476 and ISO 21138. Furthermore an extensive project under TEPPFA premises supported by LyondellBasell and Borealis regarding service lifetime of polyolefin gravity sewer pipes have been done. During the project investigations on virgin non mineral modified materials, the long term behaviour under constant strain loading of non-pressure sewer pipesand on excavated PP-B and PE pipes have been performated. The test program and result have been validated by an independent third party authority. Based on these results the requirements related to materials, pipes and installation as mentioned in table 3 have been defined to assure a life-time of 100 years.
Concluding remarks
For more than 30 years, PP has earned a reputation as a high quality plastic piping material. Numerous studies including failure statistics show that the confidence and trust in plastic pipe systems are increasing. PP pipe systems are currently selected for general sewage systems with clear targets in low total lifetime costs, long problem-free operation and long lifetime expectancy.
Additional opportunities are identified with both solid wall and structured-wall pipe systems , such as ribbed, twin-wall of spirally wound solutions, especially in larger pipe size through to the weight advantage compared to rigid pipe systems. Polypropylene is a highly accepted reliable material for pipe system due to several advantages as shown in table 4.
