SLOW CRACK GROWTH RESISTANCE OF REPROCESSED PVC

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2021 Amsterdam

The Cyclic Cracked Round Bar (CRB) Test has been applied to study the slow crack growth (SCG) resistance of virgin, recycled, and reprocessed PVC-U. This fracture mechanical test allows a quick ranking of the SCG resistance of PVC-U. A clear correlation between the K-value and the SCG resistance has been elaborated. The investigated recycled PVC-U materials show a similar SCG resistance as virgin grades. However, further research is needed to investigate the effects of impurities and plasticizer residues on the SCG resistance. The results also demonstrate that repeated reprocessing of up to 10 runs creates no significant negative influence on the SCG resistance of PVC-U.

MODIFIED PLAIN STRAIN GROOVED TENSILE TEST TO EVALUATE LARGE DIAMETER PE PIPES

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2021 Amsterdam

Thomas R. Kratochvilla, Patrick Grünbeck, Christoph Bruckner, Raimund Eremiasch, Harald Wilhelm, Mario Vukelja

In the last decades pipe dimensions of extruded PE pipes have reached new orders of size. Today, PE pipes with outer diameters of up to DN/OD 3500 mm are produced and used for pressure pipe applications like seawater intake/discharge, outfall, sewage and industrial process piping systems.

To test the long-term performance of PE pipes the internal pressure test has been successfully used in the last decades. To evaluate the long-term performance of large diameter PE pipes an alternative test method which correlates with the internal pressure test was developed in the last years. In 2012 the approach to evaluate a modified PSGT test according ISO 23228 was started. Data for different pipe diameters were generated using the modified PSGT test at 20 °C and 80 °C and compared with internal pressure test results. A correlation was established and first reference points for evaluating large diameter pipes generated.

LONG-TERM DURABILITY OF NEW POLYMER COMPOSITE VALVES FOR DRINKING WATER NETWORKS

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2021 Amsterdam

Jennifer Ravereau, Jose Teixeira Pinto, Malena Bernabeu, Jose Alacid, Jean-Philippe Le Goff, Frederic Mohier, Benjamin Rabaud

Drinking water network fittings such as valves are made of brass materials known to be robust over long periods. Due to the gradual inflation metallic raw material costs, composite plastic valves have grown in market share. Uncertainties remain, however, on their long-term reliability. The aim of this work is to select the best valve design/material couple using a three-step evaluation: (i) a valve design development corresponding to standard and operational specifications , (ii) a selection of the most relevant materials and (iii) a validation of the long-term durability through accelerated ageing tests which reproduce the disinfectant and pressure exposure (HOCl, ClO 2 , 6 bar at 40°C) of real operational conditions. The qualification of valves over the 18-month ageing period is based on key performance indicators including water leak appearance under pressure, valve mass, internal diameter and internal surface analysis through microscopic observations and infrared spectroscopy. These analyses are complemented with the impact on the water quality prior to and after ageing. Results of the investigations show that a smart valve design combined with the right polymer material enabled replacing brass valves by guaranteeing a long-term durability. The accelerated ageing tests

Use of PE100+ Materials in Trenchless Technology Trenchless Asia 2023

SHORT SUMMARY

PE100 pipes are widely used in the installation, rehabilitation and replacement of pressure systems. They can be installed using a variety of trenchless technologies and so the PE100+ Association developed an online guide to aid end users in selecting the most appropriate methods. The presentation will give an overview of methods that can be used to install PE100 pipes, along with a summary of the EN ISO 11295 family of standards and an introduction to the association’s online guide.

ABSTRACT

PE100 pipes are the most widely used material for the installation, rehabilitation and replacement of pressure pipes for water and gas supply and for pressure sewers. Such pipes can be installed using a broad range of trenchless technologies and hence the selection of the most appropriate method and identification of the correct standards can be a challenge for end user organisations.

The PE100+ Association, working with trenchless industry experts developed an online guide to educate end users about the different technologies. The guide also aids users in selecting appropriate trenchless methods for the use of PE100 pipes in both new installation and rehabilitation works. The paper and presentation will provide an overview of the trenchless methods that can be used to install PE100 pipes, together with a summary of the EN ISO 11295 family of standards that cover these methods and an introduction to the online guide.
